With 2-Step Verification (also known as two-factor authentication), you add an extra layer of security to your account in case your password is stolen. After you set up 2-Step Verification, you’ll sign in to your account in two steps using:

  1. Something you know, like your password

  2. Something you have, like your phone

Explain what this how-to article is for. For example, you might write an article to teach people at your company how to set up a corporate email account or file an expense report.

 Instructions

Open your Google Account.

In the navigation panel from the left, select Security.

Under “Signing in to Google,” select 2-Step Verification, then Get started.

Authenticate.

Enter your phone number so Google will be able to send you a text message or a phone call.

  • Google will only use this number for account security.

Enter the verification code received.

Turn on 2-Step Verification.

Afterwards, you are given the option to set up additional backup steps to use for 2-Step Verification, like Google Authenticator, Backup codes, Google prompts or Backup phone. We recommend using Google Authenticator.
